Forbidden City was a planned project in Dubai International City that aimed to create a mixed-use district inspired by the Chinese culture and heritage. The project was launched in 2006 and would have included low-rise residential buildings, retail outlets, gardens, museums, and performance courts. The project was designed to be a replica of some of the most ancient Chinese buildings, such as the Temple of Heaven and the Great Wall. However, the project was cancelled by the Dubai Courts due to financial and technical difficulties. Forbidden City was one of the many country-specific and themed residential developments that were proposed for Dubai International City, a large-scale development that covers an area of 800 hectares.
